Nature’s Neighbors

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA2757904Nature’s Neighbors is a time-tested multi-aged summer program for elementary age school children interested in the flora and fauna of their immediate environments. June and July finds our students exploring the hills, woodlands, trails, levees and waters of the Henderson area. Every day includes a field trip unless it’s raining. In that case, environmental activities are carried on in the Feathers Building classroom and JRBrown River Center. The primary focus has been on bird identification, with discoveries communicated to Minnesota Audubon, Minnesota Ornithological Union and2835874_orig the Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology. Training in volunteerism is stressed. Leadership qualities are promoted for older students, as they develop projects to be presented at the JRBrown River Center and for the public. The program has proven to be popular, and enrollments are kept to a limited number of young naturalists. Parents are always welcome to join the explorers.
